Full Description
Socket stone, possibly a cross base, which has been in this location since at least the first half of the 19th century. It is a large square block with a central hole or socket on top, embedded in the ground and surrounded by undergrowth. The stone measures circa 1.3 metres by 1.2 metres, and at least 0.5 metres thick. The socket measures 350mm by 320mm and 190mm in depth. Jervise reported it in 1859 as being believed to have held a shaft that was built into the south wall of the church at Monifieth (NO43SE0025), although at that time Jervise did not believe the stone was old enough to be contemporary. The OS Name Book records that there is a tradition that it had been used as a consecrated stone for baptisms, hence the name 'Font Stone'.
