Full Description

Forres War memorial, built by A Marshall Mackenzie in 1922, with the sculptor Alexander Carrick. It commemorates those who died in the First and Second World Wars, and the Gulf Conflict. It is in the form of a 10 feet (3 meters) bullfaced whinstone pedestal, surmounted by a bronze figure of a helmeted highland soldier standing at ease, right foot slightly forward. The pedestal sits on a circular stepped ashlar plinth. The crests of the Seaforths, Admiralty and Gordons are also displayed. The stone for the pedestal comes from Wester New Forres quarry, and the plinth is of Aberdeen granite. A full transcription of the memorial is held in the AAS Digital Archive. Amongst those commemorated is William Anderson VC - see also NJ15SW0052 for a commemorative paving stone for William Anderson VC. In front of the war memorial is a small pillar dedicated to the crew of a Nimrod from RAF Kinloss which crashed in Afghanistan in 2006.
