Full Description

Site of a souterrain (Wainwright's Tealing I), which was discovered circa 1725. The OSA (1792) records that it was 'a little westward from the house of Tealing, about 60 or 70 years ago, was discovered an artificial cave or subterraneous passage'/ It is by the burn, but is on well-drained ground. It was said to be 'composed of large loose stones', 1.2m high and wide and was traced for a considerable length before being re-covered. Two finds were recovered, 'a broad earthen vessel, and an instrument resembling an adze, both of them formed very neatly'. It was uncovered again about 1880-1, by William McNicol, who discovered a sandstone lamp. It is unknown what condition it is now in, though presumably some remains still survive under the ground.
