Full Description
Depopulated settlement, a substantial township of at least twelve houses, three enclosures and a corn-drying kiln. It is depicted on the OS 1st edition map annotated as 'In Ruins', and unroofed buildings are also shown on the 2nd edition map. Also known as Blacharrage. Ruins of buildings remain in stone, although earlier footings covered in turf seem to run underneath. A sunken track runs northwest to southeast and on to a second settlement at Glenmuick 2 (NO39SE0005). To the southwest of the settlement are extensive rig and furrow. The rigs are long and wide on an 8 degree slope. Rigs at the foot of the slope are well demarked by rushes growing in the furrows. Possible lynchets upslope. The complex of remains centred on NO3568092545 was surveyed as part of Scotland's Rural Past project. This recorded the remains of over 30 buildings (including a kiln barn) 10 enclosures and a number of other structures. The settlement appears to have gone through several phases of development with earlier buildings being abandoned or altered for different purposes. To the south of the settlement are areas of rig and furrow cultivation enclosed within drystone dykes. See also NO38SE0062.
