Full Description
Designed landscape around Monaltrie House (NO39NE0039), formerly known as Ballater House, shown on the historic OS maps. The OS 1st edition map shows the designed landscape to the northeast and southwest of the house. This includes a rectangular nursery to the east of the house, a rectangular walled garden with a curved north wall and a central sundial to the northeast, a steading, offices and twin gate lodges (NO39NE0163) and kennels to the far northeast. It is separated from Ballater by the railway line in the southwest and the ancient woodland of Craigendarroch to the west. There is little change to the OS 2nd edition map, except for the gradual expansion of the town of Ballater from the south into the woodland of the designed landscape. The designed landscape is now small in extent, as with the expansion of Ballater the southern and northeastern parts of the landscape has now been mostly lost to residential development.
Period Notes
