Full Description
Former school, now in residential use, built in the early 19th century with later 19th and 20th century additions. It is depicted as a school on the 1st edition OS map, but is no longer depicted as such on the 2nd edition OS map. Local knowledge suggests that the school was originally on the ground floor, then a second floor was built to house the school master. A wing was built to the rear and this became the school master's house and the school moved to a neighbouring site. It is a two-storey, three-bay, simple granite rubble traditional house, now L-plan with the late 19th century two-storey wing added to the rear and with a late 20th century single-storey entrance porch added in the re-entrant angle. The symmetrical south elevation overlooks River Dee, and has timber sash and case windows: eight-pane to the ground-floor and four-pane to the first floor. Plate glass is used on the other elevations. The graded grey slate roof has ashlar skews, gable end stacks to the east, west and north and an axial ridge stack. There is a coped rubble boundary wall to the west and north, and a low wall to the south, topped with a simple metal railing and interspersed with gable piers. The pedestrian entrance has a pair of simple square granite gate piers.
