Full Description

Remains of Hostelry and site of Hospital. Keith wrote in 1732 'there was an Hospital Spittal (below an ale house: edit) on the east end of Loch Muick, where there is a pass (called the Caiple Month: edit), to the hills of Clove'. Easson states that its existence cannot be verified but Jervise writes that 'A religious house and Hospice were early established at the Spital of Muick by the Bishop and Chapter of Aberdeen and was superseded by a hostelry until c1850 near the site'. Fraser described the site as follows: 'Extensive foundations of the Spital... near the Loch…can still be seen', although McConnochie says that the site of the hospice is now occupied by a forester's cottage. Leyden, visiting the Spital of Glenshee in 1800, noted 'Spital signifies a village'. Present remains on the site comprise low turf-covered walls of a large rectangular building of round-cornered construction. There are traces of a smaller U-shaped building to the north. There are no buildings shown at this location on the OS 1st or 2nd edition maps.
