Full Description

Remains of buildings and an enclosure on the southern bank of the river South Esk, southeast of Whitehaugh. Recorded by RCAHMS Glen Clova survey in 1999 as a farmstead comprising five buildings and enclosure. The buildings are between 8.8m and 15.8m long, a line of four standing on the southeast edge of a small field or enclosure on the southeast bank of the Burn of Lowie. Three contain two compartments and one also has an outshot. The farmstead is named Burnlowie on the 1794 John Ainslie map but is not depicted on the (circa 1846 and circa 1888) 1st or 2nd edition OS maps. Remains of two buildings and an enclosure appear on current OS maps. Various features were also recorded during walkover survey carried out in 2021 ahead of proposed woodland creation (NO37SW0151). MM06a comprised a curvilinear boundary to the south and west of the farmstead, comprising a line of medium-sized bounders. It was truncated by road building at the northern end and ploughing associated with historic planting, rendering full extent of the enclosure unclear. There is a clearly defined entrance on the northeast side with internal returns. MM06b is a rectangular building of two compartments, of which up to three courses are visible. It measures 3.5m by 10.5m, the northwest compartment measuring 4m by 2.2m with an entrance on the northeast, the southeast one 3m by 2.2m.
