Full Description

Remains of settlement and cultivation, comprising the remains of structures, of cairns and rig and furrow, recorded during survey by GUARD in 1999. Centred on NO35406400 is a small cluster of structures defined by heather covered banks with some stone evident: (a) A sub-rectangular structure with rounded ends, 9m by 4m, the downslope banks possibly revetted. There is a small attached yard (14 by 4m) on the upslope side. To the southeast is (b) a sub-rectangular structure, 10m by 5m, divided into two compartments. To the south is (c) a sub-rectangular structure, 20, by 5m. (s) an oval structure, 8m by 5m, the downslope banks possibly revetted. Centred at NO35296404 are eight small cairns arranged on the upper side if the shelf covering an area circa 90m north-south by 35m. Most are oval in plan and appear as short lengths of bank, ranging in length from 3m to 9m. The longer of the cairns may define cultivation plots. At the north end of this area are two parallel lengths of dyke, comprising lines of boulders 15m long and 11m apart, which may represent strip fields. An area of rig and furrow is visible extending downslope west of the cairns. Walkover survey of part of the site was carried out by GUARD Archaeology in March 2021 ahead of proposed woodland creation (NO36SE0079). This recorded three sub-rectangular structures, two with attached yards. The eight small cairns recorded in 1999 could not be found due to the vegetation cover. Measured survey was subsequently undertaken by GUARD in August 2021. Structure 1 measured circa 9m by 5m, Structure 2 (to the southeast) circa 10m by 5m, and Structure 3 (further east) circa 10.5m by 4.5m. The area of rig and furrow to the west measured circa 165m north-south and circa 60m east-west, the rigs aligned northeast-southwest, with wavelength between 14 and 16m. They were defined more by the furrow than by height of rigs.
