Full Description

Remains of two circular enclosures, probably plantations, were recorded by Headland Archaeology during a survey of the Balnaboth Estate. Both are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS map (1865), both appear again on the 2nd edition map, but only the western of the two is shown on the 2006 map. This western enclosure measures 21 m in diameter and is enclosed by a steep asymmetric bank standing up to 0.7 m high in places. The character of the bank suggests that it was built to keep stock out and it may have contained an ornamental plantation. About 100m to the east, on the edge of the river terrace in open birch woodland, is the second enclosure which measures 24 m in diameter. It is enclosed by a 1.5 m wide and 0.4 m high stony bank and may also have contained an ornamental plantation.
