Full Description

Remains of multi-period settlement, recorded by Headland Archaeology during a survey of the Balnaboath estate. Four hut-platforms form part of a prehistoric settlement located on the south-west facing slopes of the hill south-west of Tombeth. The hut platforms are set out in a row on the lower slopes of the hill. Post-Medieval structures comprise 15 buildings to the south-east of the area within an old plantation which is now partially felled, and a ruined farm steading to the north-west. This farmstead is shown as ruinous on the 1st edition OS map as a roofed building, one unroofed building and a lozenge shaped enclosure. It is named 'Inchbruthie' and described as 'in ruins'. On the 2006 map the farmstead is shown as comprising the remains of the southern building and parts of the northern building and enclosure. There is also an extensive area of rig and furrow to the east and south-east of the ruinous farmstead. The rigs are reversed south in profile, 8-12m in width and up to 0.4m in height. A second area of rig, of different character, below the rig and hut-circles. These rigs are 6-10m in width and up to 0.9m in height.
