Full Description
Remains of five sheilings which were recorded by Headland Archaeology during a survey of the Balnaboth Estate. Three of the buildings are situated in a small hollow on the hillside some 60m above the burn. The largest of these buildings measures 13m from north-south x 4m over 1m wide stony banks standing up to 0.4m in height. An internal partition has created a small room, measuring 2m x 2m, at the north end and a larger room, entered from the middle of the west wall, to the south. A low curving bank in front of the entrance terminates at the west end of an adjacent building. It possibly defines a small yard area in front of the two buildings. Set at right angles to the north-west end of the building, there is a rectangular platform, measuring 8m from east-west x 3m. It is possibly the remains of an earlier building. The building to the west measures 4m from east-west x 2.5m with low stony banks. A third building lies to the north-west. It measures 5m from northwest-southeast x 3m with stony banks. There is a single partition. Two further buildings lie on the hillside to the east. One building is situated just above the hollow. It measures 10m from north-south x 3.5m over stony banks spread to 1m in width and standing up to 0.3m in height. A partition has created two rooms, the larger on the north measuring 4m in length whilst the south room measures 3m in length. the other structure lies isolated on the hillside to the south of a fenceline. It measures 7m from northwest-southeast x 4m externally. The walls are turf-clad, 1m wide stony banks with the stone inner facing showing through. The entrance is on the west.
