Full Description

Remains of one possible hut-circle and many huts and buildings, earthern banks and a kiln. Recorded by the RCAHMS during field survey. No further information. Centred NO3558968708 is a hut circle (CLOVA99 248) 14.4m by 13.5m in diameter within a bank 1.4m wide and 0.4m high, with an entrance in the east-southeast side. About 12m to the south-southwest is a building (CLOVA99247), round-ended in plan, measuring 6.9m by 2.3m with an entrance on the west-southwest side, the walls now reduced to stony banks up to 0.3m high,. North of the hut circle is a fragmentary stony bank, 75m long. Centred at NO3574368499 is the remains of a farmstead comprising a cluster of three buildings (CLOVA99 256, 257, 267) and at least three huts (CLOVA99 258-260). The buildings are between 6.7m and 10m long by 2.2m to 3.6m wide, the walls reduced to rubble banks, and all three are of three compartments. The huts are between 3.7m and 5.1m long and 2.1m and 3.2m wide, the walls reduced to stony banks. One has an attached enclosure on the northeast side, and there is another enclosure within the cluster of structures. At NO3554268588 are two rectangular huts (CLOVA99 244-255), one measuring 5.1m by 2.4m with a possible entrance in the southwest leading to an attached yard, the other 5.5m by 2.2m within rubble walls and with an entrance in the northeast leading to an attached enclosure. Centred at NO3549068674 are a building, three huts and an enclosure. The building (CLOVA99 243) is subrectangular, measuring 7.3m by 2.4 within stony banks 0.3m high, and with an outshot at the northeast end and an attached enclosure containing a hut, 3.5m by 2.2m, to the northeast. Two other huts (CLOVA99 239, 240) with ends conjoined, stand to the west of the building, the southeastern one with an entrance on the southwest. At NO3559968545 is a hut (CLOVA99 246) with two other possible structures to the south. The hut is of two compartments, and measures 5.7m by 1.9m, the walls now reduced to stony banks, and with an entrance at the south-southwest. Centred at NO3568468206 are at least four buildings (CLOVA99 275, 276, 279, 282), four huts (CLOVA99 277, 278, 280, 281) and an enclosure. The buildings are between 6.3m and 8.7m long and 1.9m and 2.2m wide with rubble walls up to 0.5m high. The northernmost is of two compartments. The huts are between 3m and 5m long, and 1.9m and 2.2m wide, the walls reduced to stony banks no more than 0.3m high, one surviving only as a grass-covered mound. The enclosure lies to the east of the buildings. At NO3525468458 is a rectangular building (CLOVA99 265), 6.9m by 2m, the walls up to 0.4m high, the interior of two compartments, and with a partially blocked entrance on the east-northeast side. Centred at NO3577968040 are three rectangular buildings (CLOVA99 272-274), the westernmost, measuring 8.6m by 1.9m, is of two compartments each with a single entrance on the south-southwest. The two other buildings, linked by a small bank, are 6.5m by 2.2m and 5.9m by 2.1m within rubble banks. At NO3516368872 is the remains of a rectangular hut (CLOVA99 238), measuring 4.3m by 2m, the walls reduced to stony banks, and with an entrance on the east-northeast side. At NO3564168377 are two rectangular shieling huts (CLOVA99 283, 284), the eastern 3.3m by 2.2m with an entrance on the southwest and an outshot on the northwest end. The other appears to sit in the east corner of a possible enclosure and measures 4.6m by 2.9m the walls reduced to stone footings up to 0.4m high. Centred at NO3539268879 are a kiln barn (CLOVA99 261) and a possible building platform. The barn is 5.9m by 4.4m, the northwest end set into the slope, the bowl of the kiln 1.8m in diameter. A DBA and walkover survey was carried out by Alder Archaeology in 2017 ahead of a proposed hydro-electric scheme (see NO36NW0082). This also recorded a potential building platform at NO3533368708 visible as a sub-rectangular depression measuring 3.5 by 2m, although noted that this may alternatively have been a borrow pit.
