Full Description

Remains of three farmsteads of at least two different periods and of a hut-circle. RCAHMS during field survey recorded a township, comprising at least six buildings and four huts, spread across undulating rough pasture about 250m southwest of The Drums. In the same area there are two sheepfolds and traces of rig cultivation. There is no cohesive pattern to the remains, and the relationship of some of the structures to the relict cultivation clearly indicates a considerable chronological depth. Surveyed as part of Scotland's Rural Past programme in 2009, which identified the following additional features. The northeast range has a stone terrace along the façade of the southeast compartment. Inside this compartment is a later pen. The outshot at the southeast end contains a similar pen. Between the northeast range and the southeast building runs a narrow passage to the former. South of the southeast building lies a yard. Its southern dyke breaks the line of the linear field dyke. Between the southeast building and the southwest range is a filled-in corn drying kiln, 2.5m in diameter. A ditch runs along the uphill side of the southwest range. The site was visited by Alder Archaeology during walkover survey in advance of a proposed hydro-electric scheme.
