Full Description

Remains of a farmstead recorded during field survey carried out by Clyde Archaeology in October 2023 ahead of proposed woodland creation (NO35NW0102). This recorded a possible rectangular turf building defined by low banks up to 1.5 m wide and 0.3 m high. It is most visible at the western end which appears to form a gable for a building 10 m long by 5 m wide, although fainter remains at the eastern end suggest the building could extend for a further 5 m. A possible 2 m wide track runs along the southern edge of the building leading to a low cairn measuring circa 6 m across. There are more amorphous 'humps and bumps' immediately to the north of the cairn and east of the building and a raised area of improved ground to the south of the building may also relate to this settlement. There is also an area of improved grassy ground to the north of the building. The building and related remains could form part of the settlement named ‘Whiteley’ shown on Ainslie’s map of 1794 and Thomson’s Atlas of 1832.
