Full Description

Remains of a cairn, shown on the OS maps from the 1st edition map onwards. It is sited on a spur of Welton Hill, about 400m north-northwest of Welton steading. It was mostly removed by the tenant of Welton circa 1842 when about 20-30 cart loads of stones were taken away. No funerary remains were found, although the cairn was believed to be of that nature. It survives as a low turf bank in heather, scarcely 0.1m in height, denoting the perimeter which measures 11.0m overall diameter and a strip of a stony mound 0.3m high and 1.2m broad on the west side of the perimeter. This is the only part of the feature left to reveal stone construction. Surveyed by MAS in 2010 as part of a walkover survey in advance of a proposed windfarm.
