Full Description
Restored castle, still in use. It was originally built in 1575 by Lawrence, 4th Lord Oliphan, and named Newtyle Castle. It is shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as Z-plan, and depicted as ruinous. It was restored during the mid-1980s, and by 1990 it is recorded as being restored and occupied. It is a four-storey building with a vaulted basement and a square tower at the north-east and south-west angles, and there is a circular turret in the re-entrant angle of the north-east tower, and there are indications of another circular turret having been in the re-entrant angle of the south-west tower. During the renovations, pottery sherds raging in date from the 16th century to modern were found immediately east of the castle, together with roofing tiles and fallen masonry. Not to be confused with Hatton Castle in Turriff, Aberdeenshire (see NJ74NE0002 in Aberdeenshire HER).
