Full Description
Farmstead and farmhouse, in use, depicted on historic mapping. The OS 1st edition shows a quadrangular steading with entrance on the southeast, a building occupying part of the court, another on the west side and a small building on the northwest side (possibly a horse mill). To the east is a long building, and a small rectangular building with attached garden. Southeast f the steading is an L-plan building, and further to the southeast, on the opposite side of the road, a house. By the time of the 2nd edition the steading court had been infilled and the steading extended to the northwest. the building on the west side had been removed and a small structure added, To the east the two buildings had been joined, The L-plan building had been reduced to a long range. There have since been further additions to the steading. Standing building survey of the disused steading was carried out by Alder Archaeology in September 2021 ahead of development. The steading is constructed of pink Angus sandstone rubble with a grey slate roof. A date stone above a side entrance is inscribed 1777. The central part of the original steading had been demolished in the later 19th century, replaced by large gable-ended sheds, and around this this time smaller sheds housing the north byre were added. Within the byre, close of the west side entrance was a masons' mark: comparison with others recorded by the Masons' Marks Project suggests that this is quite unusual but most closely resembles an example from Inverquharity Caslte (10km to the north; NO45NW0003). Concrete ramps and walkways were added within the farm structures during the 20th century and some of the doors and lintels replaced.
