Full Description

Market cross column dating from the 17th century, with a 1976 base and finial by Gordon Burnett, Edinburgh, re-erected in 1976. It has 3 circular steps with a plain 12ft high columnar shaft, moulded cap and stone lion holding a shield. The Market Cross, first erected in the 17th century, was removed when weekly markets no longer were held in The Square and lost until the 1970s. With funding from the BBC after making the film 'The Little Minister' in Glamis, the Cross and new lion were unveiled by Fergus, 17th Earl of Strathmore and dedicated by Rev Dr Henderson. Previously listed under Glamis Castle (NO34NE0001) where it lay recumbent in undergrowth 40 yards north of South Lodge. A nearby stone is inscribed 'Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation'.
