Full Description
Pictish Symbol Stone. This cross-slab, a Class stone re-used in the Class II (9th - 10th century AD) period, is located in a wood near Thornton. It is 1m 52 cm high, and 71cm broad and of Old Red Sandstone. On one side is an interlaced cross, with at top left a four winged angel, a beast headed man with axe over his right shoulder and parts of another human figure at top right, and to bottom two deer and to the bottom right two animals, a triple disc and the flower symbol. On the reverse is an animal, a serpent and part of a mirror, all incised. The area around it was excavated in 1855, but nothing was found. Now slightly weathered. In 2012, a high-resolution laser scan survey was undertaken of the stone by AOC. A solid mesh was produced, along with a series of visualisations of the carving.
