Full Description

Former mill and mill house, in residential use, and a bridge. It was built in the 17th or 18th century, and features a datestone of 1714. An adjacent bridge to the north is probably 18th century. The mill was extended in the early- or mid-19th century. It is shown as a corn mill on a map from 1799. On the 1st edition OS map the mill is shown as a long L-plan range and is depicted as a corn and barley mill. A mill lade runs to the east of the mill, connecting to a pond on the other side of the road to the north. There is an L-plan mill house to the west. On the 2nd edition OS map the farmhouse has been extended to a U-plan, and there are two new rectangular buildings to the west of the mill. Current maps show one of the rectangular buildings to the west has been removed. The pond has been mostly drained, although remains as a part of Fowlis Burn. The mill house has been replaced or incorporated into an L-plan building covering part of the footprint of the earlier building. The various mill buildings range from single-storey, to two- and three-storey, and includes a grain mill, cartshed and barns. It is a rubble-built range with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. Some of the openings are blocked. The 1714 datestone is inset in the centre block of the mill range, and it is also initialled I.I.I.M, referring to the Murrays of Ochtertyre, lairds of Fowlis. Other features on the range include segmental cart-arches and forestairs, and there are attached coped rubble walls with hemispherically-capped gatepiers. The road to the north includes a bridge over where the pond joined the mill lade. It is a rubble-built single-arched road bridge with a segmental arch, stugged rubble voussoirs and a rubble coped parapet.

Period Notes
Hume (1972) states that the mill was built in 1668, then rebuilt in 1850. The listing details state that is was built in the late-18th century, and extended in the early- or mid-19th century. It was listed on 26/08/1992.
