Full Description
Site of a country house and remains of its associated designed landscape and buildings. The mansion was built in the eighteenth century and was doubled in size and aggrandised probably by Sir Robert Smirke, circa 1825, with a later 19th century porch. The building became a hospital in the 20th century and was derelict by the 1990s. A child fell from the roof and died in 2002, and the house was eventually demolished by 2005. The remaining features of the estate are three lodges, an oval walled garden, the stables block and other buildings associated with the hospital within the remains of a designed landscape. In 2010 Cameron Archaeology carried out a standing building survey on the remaining parts of the house and stables. Baldovan House had been completely demolished and the demolition material piled on top of the foundations allowing no recording prior to clearing the rubble. The walls of the stable building survived to 2 m high and were recorded prior to demolition.
