Full Description

Stables, coach house and squash court, originally built in the late 18th century with additions. The former brewhouse was converted to a squash court by J Donald Mills and Godfrey D B Shepherd, in the earlier 20th century. An asymmetrical group of buildings, composed of a single storey and attic stable and coach house to the centre, a high single storey squash court to the south, a single-storey garage adjoined to the west and single-storey covered standing to the north. Roughly aligned north to south and is to the east of the mansion house (NO33NW0031). White painted rubble, with painted weather-boarding to the garage, with vertically boarded timber and timber-framed lattice work to the covered standing. Various multi-pane timber sash and case windows, linear rooflights to the squash court, rooflights to the stable, coach house and covered standing. Pitched grey slate roofs. The former brewhouse, stable and coach house is an important component of the Auchterhouse estate, being one of the earliest surviving ancillary buildings on the estate. The ancillary buildings at Auchterhouse were predominantly constructed from the late 18th to the early 20th century and as such are important in understanding the development of this estate as well as enhancing the architectural and historic setting of the Old Mansion House.
