Full Description
Farmstead, still in use, with a category C-listed farmhouse. The steading was built in the late 18th century with later additions and alterations, and the farmhouse was built in circa 1850. It is also known as 'The Neuk'. On the 1st edition OS map it is shown as a U-plan steading open to the south, with a range within the court. There is a U-plan farmhouse to the west, with a pond and sluice to the north of it. On the 2nd edition OS map the steading has been infilled on the east side, and the farmhouse has been filled creating a rectangular building. There are three small additional rectangular buildings. Current maps show that two of the rectangular buildings has been removed and the pond infilled and partially built over. The farmhouse is a single-storey harled rubble building with a slate roof. It is gabled to the front, and half-piended to the rear, and there is a later-20th century lean-to addition to the rear. There are decorative bargeboards to the gables at the front. There are also octagonal ashlar stacks and ball and pyramidal finials to the flanking gables. A Level 1 Standing Building Survey of the steading was carried out by AOC Archaeology in May 2017 prior to proposed demolition. It recorded that the steading consists of four main barns, with two large modern additional barns to the rear (north). Dating back to the late 18th century, the stone-built barns consist of a former bothy and cart shed to the west side, a former threshing mill - with wheel pit - to the north and former animal pens and byres to the east. In the late 19th century another small linear barn was added between the barns to the east side to create a four-bay enclosed series of byres.
Period Notes
Built in circa 1850 with later 19th century alterations. The farmhouse was listed on 26/08/1992.
