Full Description

Remains of at least five buildings and two enclosures in fields disturbed by cattle west of Tomcork, most of which do not appear on historic OS maps. RCAHMS recorded four buildings and an enclosure north of the track and one building (shown as ruined on OS 1st and 2nd edition maps) and an enclosure to the south. This building is not shown on current edition OS map (2006), but is visible on air photos taken in 1977. Walkover surveys in 2011 and 2012 ahead of a proposed windfarm access identified the remains of three structures south of the track (two certainly buildings, the third possibly an enclosure rather than a building as originally interpreted), and three structures to the north. Those to the north comprised: a double compartment enclosure with a possible building attached to the southwest side, all surviving as tumbled drystone turf covered walls 1 - 1.5 m wide and standing 0.5 - 0.7 m high; a denuded building 7 m by 5 m defined by low turf covered walls 1.2 m wide and 0.2 m high; the denuded remains of a building 9 m by 4 m with low turf covered walls 1 m wide and 0.3 - 0.4 m high. The features were fenced 2013 during construction works related to Berry Burn windfarm construction, and the access route south of Tomcork farm amended to avoid the remains.
