Full Description

Remains of a farmstead, depicted on the 1st edition OS map of 1867 as a U-plan steading open to the southeast with a small farmhouse with attached garden enclosure to the west. On the 2nd edition of 1888, both buildings are shown as incomplete. The remains of the steading look to have been reused as an enclosure, and are visible on air photos taken in 1977, as is the enclosure of the farmhouse. The remains were recorded during walkover survey by CFA in 2012 in advance of a proposed electricity station, and access tracks. At NJ 04380 47314 were building footings defined by low turf covered walls measuring 0.8m wide by 4m, with an annex on the northwest side and entrance on the southeast. A sub-rectangular enclosure is attached to the southwest side of the building. West of this is an irregular area of peat cutting, probably related to the farmstead. East of the building footings is a drystone walled enclosure (on the site of the steading as shown on the 1st edition map) upstanding to a height of 2m, with entrances on the north, east and south corners.
