Full Description

Depopulated settlement, now comprising three roofed buildings and the remains of longhouses and enclosures. The OS 1st edition map shows a farmstead of Auchtavan comprising five buildings with an unroofed building to the west and, to the east, seventeen unroofed buildings, two of which are L-shaped and two are long buildings. The buildings are just to the north of an enclosed area. The OS Name Book notes that Auchtavan is 'a farm house one storey high of suitable offices attached, the former thatched, the latter partly thatched and part slated. The whole in fair repair.' (ONB, 1866). The 2nd edition map shows an additional building at Auchtavan. From Invercauld estate records it is known that rent was collected from a house on the site from 1762 and it was continuously occupied until the last resident moved out in 1900. Current OS maps depict three buildings as still roofed: the A-listed cruck-framed cottage to the east (NO29NW0001) a B-listed cottage (NO29NW0014) and a former threshing mill (NO29NW0013). The three remaining buildings show a progression of construction techniques. In the horse threshing mill the walls support a timber framed roof without use of crucks. The footings of earlier longhouses lie to the east and west. A plan of the township, plus plans and elevations of Cruck framed cottage were produced by J. Borland of RCAHMS in 1998.
