Full Description

Cottage, still in use, built in 1893 with additions in 1899 as a house for Mushi Hafiz Abdul Karim, Queen Victoria's secretary. It is a single-storey, U-plan, bungalow style, gabled cottage with overhanging eaves and service additions, constructed from lathed timber on a shuttered concrete base course. The principal windows have external, boarded timber shutters. There is a purple slate roof with lead flashings, stone ridge stacks and one wallhead stack. The west elevation is four-bay, with two windows to the north and a slightly advanced gabled entrance bay off-centre to the south with a two-lead, panelled tripartite door and an Indian style lantern in the gablehead. There is a broader gabled bay to the outer south, overlapping the entrance bay and with a broad, shallow, canted four-light window and a slate roof. The lower service porch is recessed to the outer north with narrow windows and door, and is linked to outbuildings. The south elevation is three-bay with windows to each bay, that to the east being advanced and gabled. The east elevation is a two-bay wing of principal rooms to the south, a recess at the centre and service quarters to the north. The outbuildings are in the form of en suite stores, linked to the cottage by a corrugated roofed passage, and having several doors and cast-iron rooflights.
