Full Description

The farmstead of Berryburn is depicted on the OS map of 1846 as a roughly rectangular steading with a central open court. A horse mill lies against the east wall. Two other buildings lie to the north and northwest. By 1888 the farmstead has been altered to an L-shape with an attached enclosure to the northwest. The building to the northwest has now gone. Today a later building stands in the courtyard area. The house to the north is still roofed but the barn is thought to be gutted. The remains of the circular raised horse-gang lies to the east of the barn and to the southeast are at least two rows of stack-stands. The remains were recorded by CFA in 2012 during walkover surveys in connection with proposed windfarm access. Field survey also identified number of features associated with the farmstead: a partially turf-covered low pile of stones at NJ 0597145282, measuring 2m by 1.5m by 0.2m, thought to represent modern field clearance, what may be the remains of a tumbled field wall at NJ 05919 45256: a fragment of old trackway/holloway at NJ 05932 45299 defined by parallel stoney turf-covered banks set 2.5-3m apart, probably part of the original track to the farm, and two cast-iron decorative gate/fence posts at NJ 0575245305, measuring 1.2m in height and set 2.5m apart.
