Full Description
Mansion house, dated 1888, built by William Joseph Starkey Barber Starkey, after purchasing the land from the Airlie estate. Designed by John Carver. The house is two-storey, rubble built with a domed slated roof. It consists of two circular buildings in plan, the main house with a conical dormered roofs, rising to a cupola, with a circular kitchen wing to the rear connected by a short corridor. In use later as a convalescent home, accommodation for forestry workers, a youth hostel and an outdoor centre. To the southwest is the circular Gate Lodge (NO25NW0071), to the north is the circular Generator House (NO25NW0068), and further to the north and northwest are the circular Coach House and Stables (NO25NW0069) and the circular Kennels building (NO25NW0023). William Joseph Starkey Barber Starkey, who was an engineer, designed Knockshannoch Lodge to be one of the first houses in Scotland to have hydro electric power, with a weir in the nearby Newton Burn supplying electricity. He was killed on the Western Front in 1914.
