Full Description
Remains of clearance cairns, structures, buildings, banks and an enclosure recorded during walkover survey carried out by AOC Archaeology in May 2019 ahead of a proposed woodland creation scheme (NO26SE0017). Clearance cairns centred NO2773659856 comprise several small mounds, with stone under turf, measuring on average circa 4.5m in diameter and standing up to 0.7m high. Two linear banks, one north-south (NO2777959936) the other crossing it aligned east-west (NO2774259914) are both of turf and stone, the former 0.7-0.8m wide and up to 0.5m high, the other with banks spread up to 2.5m and surviving up to 0.4m high. At NO2781759955 is a sub-circular structure with stone and turf banks, measuring 6m by 5m internally the banks spread up to 1m wide and standing up to 0.4m high. At NO2780759930 is a degraded rectangular structure of stone and turf walls, measuring 5m by 2m internally, the banks spread to 1m wide and up to 0.5m high. Low footings at NO2778759945 may be the remains of a pen, measuring 8m by 3.5m internally, the banks of turf with some stone spread to 0.8m wide and standing 0.2m high. An arc of turf and stone bank at NO2762259874 may be the remains of a structure, its banks spread to 0.8m and up to 0.3m high. At NO2774959874 is a small circular structure partly built into a stony mound with an entrance on the northwest side. It measures 2m in diameter with stony banks up to 0.6m wide and 0.4m high. At NO2779259863 is a sub-oval structure measuring 3m by 4m internally with stone and turf walls spread to 0.8m wide and 0.4m high. At NO2780659674 is a degraded L-shaped structure of two compartments, the walls of large boulders and stones under turf, 0.5m wide and up to 0.3m high. A four-compartment building at NO2783159881, probably remains of a farmstead, measures 15.7m by 2m with walls 0.5m wide. Four small c circular features which may be remains of structures or cairns are located at be NO2778959742, NO2780259736, NO2776659758 and NO2771159758. They measure circa 0.5m in diameter and up to 0.8m high. Two large cairns at NO2766259885 and NO2763459881 are both circa 8m in diameter and up to 1m high.
