Full Description

Remains of field boundary dykes, sheepfolds, a platform, embankments and a footbridge, recorded during a walkover survey, conducted by Alder Archaeology in October 2020, in advance of proposed woodland creation (NO25NE0079). Most of the features represent an extensive system of field dykes (recorded as Features 06-07, 09, 11-13, 16-17, 20-25, 27-28, 31, 52-53) across the south and southwest of the proposed planting area and on the lower slopes between Wester Coul (NO25NE0042) and Middle Coul (NO25NE0073). These appear on the OS historic maps, demonstrating that the field system was at least of mid-nineteenth century origin, but may well have been considerably older. The remains of the dyke recorded as Feature 53 (NO 27234 58260), measures 0.50 m tall, 0.50 m to 1 m wide, and runs southeast into the existing tree cover. The sheepfolds were recorded as Features 08 (NO 27541 57606), 15 (NO 27356 57632) and 33 (NO 27697 57885). The platform was recorded as Feature 26 (NO 27243 58014). The embankments were recorded as Features 14 (NO 27338 57712), 29 (NO 27221 57822), 30 (NO 27229 57831) and 57 (NO 27100 58178). The small flat footbridge recorded as Feature 58 (NO 27101 58179) crosses a canalised burn, measures 2.50 m wide, 1.20 m span, has protruding slabs, and cuts off the northwest end of an embankment (Feature 57). This embankment might have been mistakenly identified as a cairn in the past, due to the footbridge cutting off the extreme north end of it and with it being located at the southwest corner of an area of cairn remains (NO25NE0010). Dam remains and an outflow were recorded as Features 18 (NO 27421 57816) and 19 (NO 27424 57814), which are part of the Middle Coul farmstead (NO25NE0073) and depicted on the OS historic maps as a dam and sluice.
