Full Description

Cairnfield. It is recorded in antiquarian accounts by the OSA, Maclagan and Warden. Sited at Lintrathen and half a mile northwest of the Gallows Knowe (NO25SE0009), on an elevated tract of moorland, the sources mention many tumuli or cairns. When the OS were in the Strone Hill area in 1958, no traces of any cairns or tumuli were noted. However, they were noted at Lintrathen by J Sherriff in 1982 and during a field visit by AAS in 2006 a dense concentration of small cairns, between 1-3m wide and distributed roughly 5m apart were observed. The cairns were located mainly to the north of the access track which cuts across the field, bounded by a break of slope into an area of poorer drainage on the north. A few cairns were noted to the south of the track, but higher heather growth over the south of the field may contain further cairns. One possible bank was noted in the northern area.
