Full Description
Mansion, still in use. A large baronial mansion house, towered and turreted, having three storeys with a two storey wing. Constructed in harl and slate. Built in 1908 for Sir Charles W. Cayzer and still occupied by the Cayzer family. Designed by Thoms and Wilkie, architects. The initial plans were soon amended in 1910-11, with the addition of a new east wing and a porte-cochere added below the twin drum towers of the west elevation. Other elements of the original design which were altered included changes to the central gable. Building recording was carried out in February 2016 prior to minor refurbishment works. There are entrance gates (NO24SE0053) and a lodge (NO24SE0052) to the north of the house, and quarries (NO24SE0090) previously occupied part of the site.
