Full Description

Parish church and graveyard, still in ecclesiastical use, built in 1859 on the site of earlier church, of which there are no visible remains. The original church of was given to Arbroath Abbey (NO64SW0018) by Robert de London, son of William the Lion, in 1180. The present church is a small oblong gothic building with laird's loft and a bell-tower dated 1859. It is shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as a rectangular building with a porch on the south elevation, set within a D-plan graveyard. There were jougs still in existence in the 19th century, but their present whereabouts is unknown. Two stones are built into the west gable of the church, one of which has what may be an Early Christian Cross. The Ruthven Parish World War I memorial plaque is within the church. A full transcription of the memorial is held in the AAS Digital Archive. A photographic survey was carried out in 2014 prior to alterations.

Period Notes
The previous church was given to Arbroath Abbey in 1180. The current church was built in 1859, but has a stone with what may be an early Christian cross carved into it set into the west gable. There is a World War I memorial within the church. It was listed on 15/01/1980.
