Full Description
Depopulated settlement, comprising the footings of at least five sub-rectangular buildings. Recorded by RCAHMS in 1993. The remains comprise turf-and-stone footings aligned between northeast to southwest and east-northeast to west-southwest. With the exception of one building, where no entrance is visible, the entrances lie on the southeast side. There are two distinct sizes, short buildings 7.6m by 4.2m internally, and two longer buildings measuring 12.4m by 1.8m internally and 14.2m by 3.6m internally. The latter building has two compartments and either an outshot or a third compartment on the northeast. Cragan is shown on the John Farquharson map of the forest of Mar, 1703, and on the Roy Military Survey map (1744-55) on which it is named Craggan.
