Full Description

Remains of a saw mill which is depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows a single rectangular building: by the time of the 2nd edition this building had been extended and three others added to the west, one with an attached enclosure. The saw mill is reported to have gone out of use in the late 1920s, and it is possible that it was damaged by the 1929 muckle spate. A saw mill at Allanaquoich is first mentioned by Cordiner (1780) who stated that 'In 1695 a saw mill was erected at the mouth of Glen Quoich'. A saw mill is shown on a map of 1703, but on the other side of the Quoich Water and the Braco Estate map of 1740 shows a mill with lade on the east side of the Quoich. RCAHMS site visit 1993 recorded (in the eastern part of the Scheduled area) the remains of the mill as only an L-shaped hollow levelled into a gravel ridge, with a lade running into the hollow from the west-northwest and the remains of an outflow channel run off to the south. This was suggested to be the mill depicted on the 1703 map. The remains of a building lie to the north whilst the footings of the more recent mill, three further buildings, wheel pit, lade and outflow channels survive. Measured survey of the east site was carried out by NTS in 2000. Further measured survey was carried out by NTS in December 2014 of both the east and west Scheduled Areas. Features in the east were visible largely only as changes of topography but included scant remains of a building measuring 9.7m by 2.31m visible as a low grass covered bank, a hollow which has been suggested to be the site of a sawmill and measuring 13/3m by 4.21m, a lade to the east of the hollow, and a tail race south of the hollow. Survey of the western Scheduled area recorded the wheel pit, remains of the sawmill and other buildings, lade, enclosure and a large stone pile. Walkover survey was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in June/July 2015 to assess damage resulting from flooding in the wake of storm Bertha, and record the present condition of the remains.
