Full Description
Depopulated settlement composed of a mix of sub-rectangular buildings and shieling huts, suggesting that the site may have functioned as both a permanent settlement and a shieling site at different periods. The main group of structures is situated around a dry gully running northwest from the valley floor with two huts lying to the northwest at NO11439101 and NO11419106. The predominance of turf in the banks, as well as the levelling of the interiors into the slopes suggest that it may be of relatively early date. The township remains were recorded by RCAHMS survey in 1993. There are eight sub-rectangular buildings measuring between 11.6 m by 3 m and 6.1 m by 3 m, most levelled into the slope, the turf banks surviving up to 1 m wide and 0.5 m high with intermittent stone facing evident. Where visible, entrances are on the south side. One building has two compartments and another has three. Shallow hollows outside the entrances of three buildings may indicate the site of middens. One building has an enclosure on the south side. The seven sub-rectangular huts recorded measure between 5.7 m by 2.4 m and 3.4 m by 2.4 m internally within turf and stone banks, with intermittent facing, the banks spread up to 1.5 m wide and standing up to 0.5 m high. Some may form part of the township, but others including the two to the northwest of the main group may have been part of a shieling site. There are also two kilns lying to the northeast and southwest of the main cluster of buildings. The latter has a small barn upslope of it. It is possibly the settlement indicated on the John Farquharson map of the forest of Mar, 1703, named Little AQ (Allanaquoich).None of the features appear on the OS 1st edition map.
