Full Description
The Braemar war memorial stands in Clunie Road opposite the Fife Arms Hotel. It commemorates the dead of both World War I and II. It was designed by G Bennett Mitchell, architect, Aberdeen and unveiled on October 5 1921. It takes the form of a Celtic cross, decorated with interlacing, standing on top of base of rough hewn, irregular shaped granite blocks. The name plaque is inset into the front near the base. Adjacent to this stands the Vickers Wellington memorial which commemorates the crew of R1646, whose aircraft crashed in the Cairngorm Mountains near Braemar on the 19th January 1942 (NO18SW0029). It is in the form of a plaque mounted below one of the two Bristol Pegasus XVIII engines from the aircraft which were salvaged from the crash site in 1999. It is also dedicated to all aircrew who have died over the Cairngorm Mountains. Full transcriptions of both memorials are held in the AAS Digital Archive.
