Full Description

Remains of a small structure and probable prehistoric lithics. A single worked flint found near the summit of Strone Baddoch, the find made adjacent to a small stone structure, constructed of local limestone boulders laid on their side, in an L-plan measuring circa 2.5m by 2m forming a small wall. This structure may relate to a hen coop that was sited here possibly in the early 20th century. A series of test pits were excavated in June to July 2019 by G Warren, University of Dublin, to assess the area of the find. A total of 65 test pits were excavated in three main areas, including the site of the original find. Initial surface survey here (Area 1) recovered two probable prehistoric artefacts (flakes) from a surface exposure. Two artefacts were recovered from test pits, a fragment of flint debitage and a burnt piece of debitage, both from upper soil profiles and presumably displaced by bioturbation. Further test pits around these flint finds found no other lithics. Finds from the test pits in the immediate vicinity of the stone structure included three 0.3inch calibre bullet casings stamped with 1942 and a matching bullet. This is a standard calibre for North America and may derive from training activities of locally based Canadian personnel (which included the Forestry Corps). Test pitting in Areas 2 and 3, downslope to the northeast found no further artefacts,
