Full Description
The Porter's Lodge of Mar Estate lies at the south end of the bridge leading to the house. It is a one-storey, coursed granite tetrastyle with a piended, slated roof. The north facing building has an elaborate, colonnaded portico with four pink granite pillars at the front, and four matching pilasters within the masonry of the north wall. There are two blind arches on either side of the portico. The lodge was in place by 1826 though the exact date of erection is unknown. A later addition to the rear has been removed and the rear wall rebuilt. The entire building was gutted in 1990 in advance of planned refurbishment. A standing building survey was carried out by Kirkdale Archaeology in 2000.
