Full Description

Dam and reservoir which was used to power a hydro-electric turbine for Mar Lodge. The remains were recorded during a walkover survey that was carried out by Highland Archaeology Services in 2015 prior to the proposed constructed of a power generation scheme. The large stone and concrete built dam across the Corriemulzie stood up to circa 5 m high in parts and stretched about 70 m across the water. The dam has three buttresses on the southeast side of the river. Three iron wheels surviving above a wooden structure close to the centre appear to have been for controlling water flow through the dam. The whole structure is in a poor state of repair missing a part of the top above the outflow as well as being undermined in the same area. Around 60 m further upstream from the main dam, is a low concrete wall, standing up to 0.5 m high on the banks and running across two segments of the river. The water flows over this, forming a weir about 40 m long.
