Full Description

Depopulated settlement. A longhouse, 26m by 5m, is partitioned and sits on a natural bench. Above it, beyond a rock outcrop, is a rock and stone-walled enclosure, 30m by 40m, also a small semi-circular store set into the outcrop. On a lower shelf sits another longhouse, 10m by 5m, with an adjacent stone-edged cutivation plot, 10m by 7m. There are two other longhouses, 14m by 7m and 12m by 5m. A longhouse, 8m by 5m, has an adjacent stone-edged plot built out in the style of a lynchet. Below are further stone-edged plots. A kiln is set into a bluff at the edge of a formerly cultivated area. In the middle of the latter area is a square structure covered in stone clearance. The head dyke runs down to the river bank but there is no evidence of structures on the flood plain, although there are drainage ditches. The OS 1st and 2nd edition maps show several unroofed structures and a sheepfold.
