Full Description
Remains of a settlement/shieling. Remains of longhouses were recorded during survey in 1983-4. One, 8m by 6m, sits on an area downstream of a waterfall. Another longhouse 10m by 4m, is on a knoll with traces of rig and furrow running along slope. On another knoll are three longhouses, varying in size from 18m by 6m to 12m by 6m, one with rounded corners. There are several stone clearance heaps, a corn kiln, enclosures and four low cultivation terraces running northeast - southwest over a gently sloping area of ground between structures. The terraces are about 90m long and up to 0.2m high. Linear stony banks, associated with clearance lie on the southeast edge of the terraces. Further survey in 1990 recorded a number of rectangular foundations dispersed over a wide area around the fringes of more level ground. Two main groups were recognised: three structures above the scarp dropping to the flood plain and below an area of shallow cultivation terraces are not shown on the OS 1st edition map. A more substantial group lie immediately above this area at the foot of the rise towards the road. A corn drying kiln lies to the north edge of the settlement. This and two other structures are shown on the OS 1st edition map, all apparently abandoned.
