Full Description
Remains of a depopulated settlement, and possible shieling. Survey in 1983-3 recorded dykes and stone clearance beside a modern mortared cottage and a double steading. Also two longhouses, one 8 m by 5 m, the other on a knoll and measuring 12 m by 6 m. A rectangular house, 8 m by 4 m, had a circular kiln at the east end. Further survey in 1990 identified remains of at least two phases of settlement, the earlier represented by a dispersed series of foundations scattered above the more level ground occupied by the later farm buildings. None of these early features appear on the 1st edition OS map which does show the later farmstead, although by that time it appears that some of the buildings shown were deserted. A series of tracks shown on the 1st edition map connected the later farm to the road higher up the valley side.
