Full Description
Remains of a shieling, comprising a rectangular 2-compartment house with two entrances, set into a nearby knoll. There are enclosure walls and also the tip from the Old Mar Lodge Laundry. Also set into the knoll is a longhouse together with other indeterminate structures with bowed ends. On the other side of the track to the east is a square enclosure. All are depicted on the OS 1st edition map. The remains were recorded during walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in 2015 ahead of a hydroelectric scheme. F2 comprised the damaged footings of a rectangular structure measuring 3.5 m by 8m, with a clear internal division, the western half now occupied by a modern concrete pad. To the south,F3 is an area of loose tumbled stone and disturbed ground, measuring circa 7 m by 5 m on a raised platform, possibly the remains of a ruined building. F4 is a U-plan enclosure, circa 35m across around an area of flat ground, comprising low turf covered banks (up to 0.5 m high) with some stone forming the edge most of the way round. On the southwest side was a possible attached side pen or structure measuring circa 6 m by 9 m consisting of tumbled local stone. To the south F5 is a rectangular structure circa 11 m by 5 m, the walls up to 1.3 m high, with a central division and two entrances in the northeast wall, the southeast gable close to the present track. A small cellar like extension on the southwest wall is dug into the knoll on this side.
