Full Description

Restored Tower-House, now in commercial use, previously known as Fortar Castle. It was built in 1608 by mason William Stanness of Dundee for James, sixth Lord Ogilvy of Airlie. It was sacked and burnt by the Earl of Argyll in 1640, the tale being perpetuated in the ballad 'Bonnie House of Airlie'. The Restoration Committee of Estates' account of 1661 implies that Fortar Castle was completely destroyed and this has led to speculation that the ruin was a subsequent rebuilding, however it is more likely that the 1661 account was an overstatement of damages by the Ogilvys. It fell into ruin, and is depicted as such on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. It was restored in 1990 by Nicholas Groves-Raines, architects. It is a four-storey L-plan tower house, with a vaulted basement and projecting angle turrets.
