Full Description
Remains of a fermtoun. On the 1st edition OS map it is shown as four buildings, a long rectangular building at the north, three smaller (with one disused) to the south and a series of at least five enclosures with a sheepfold to the east. By the time of the 2nd edition OS map the disused building has been removed. The 2006 map shows that the farmstead is disused and that the northern long building has three compartments and an outshot at the southeast end. The remains of a limekiln lies circa 200m near the road to the southwest. A photographic and measured survey was undertaken in 2005 by SUAT in advance of proposed redevelopment of part of the site as a dwelling house. Most of the structures were of dry stone construction with lime mortar, but some probable twentieth century repairs in cement. The survey concluded that the site was probably occupied by two families as two dwellings were identified, one with a twentieth century porch. A probable pigsty, other stock enclosures including a possible sheep fank, a byre or stable, a possible cart shed, a possible horsemill and a sheep dip were recorded as well as structures which non-intrusive methods could not identify. The remains of two bayed rectangular structures, surviving as banks with stones protruding through the turf, were suggested as the oldest features on the site. All the buildings and some of the field dykes were ruinous. The remains were estimated as not more than a few hundred years old, but occupied until some point in the twentieth century.
