Full Description

Depopulated settlement. Below the track there is a longhouse with an adjacent circular pit. A second longhouse, 10m by 5m, stands on a knoll and linear stone clearance cairns lie nearby. Also a rectangular building, 10m by 4m, with a square kiln at its west end, and a large stone enclosure, 20m sq with adjacent 2-celled structure 8m by 6m. Above the track is a longhouse, 12m by 5m, and another 35m by 6m with three partitions. The head dyke disappears within a recent plantation. On a knoll behind the meltwater channel exit there is a L-shaped longhouse, 18m by 6m by 5m (walls 1m thick). Walkover survey was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in June/July 2015 to assess damage on the Mar Lodge estate resulting from flooding in the wake of storm Bertha. This may be the settlement named Thomna mouin on the Gordon map 1636-52, and Tom moin on the John Farquharson map of 1703, and Tomnamoan on the Roy Military Survey map (1744-55). Photographic recording was carried out by S Davison in 2024.
