Full Description

Cottage and farmstead/outbuildings, of later 19th century date, annotated as Inverey Cottage on the OS 1st edition map. This shows a T-plan cottage, with a group of four buildings, including a long range, and L-plan structure. By the time of 2nd edition a number of the outbuildings have been altered or replaced, and a total of 8 buildings are shown including a U-plan range. Current maps indicate that most of the outbuildings have since been removed. They show only one building to the southwest of the cottage, which is on a different alignment to and to may have replaced the earlier buildings, and one to the south of the cottage. The cottage is single storey, on a T-plan built of squared and snecked grey granite with contrasting pink tooled granite dressings, overhanging eaves with decorative timber serpentine bargeboards, and steeply pitched slate roof. The main elevation to the southeast has a steeply gabled rustic porch in local style with ball finial to apex. There is a pair of distinctive decorative gabled v-plan dormers to attic and flanking rear wing. A later single storey lean-to has been added to the west. The windows are predominantly bipartite on the ground floor with 4-pane timber sash and case windows, and. 10-pane lying panes to the dormers. This cottage was the property of the Earls and Dukes of Fife and is still owned by the Mar Estate. It was the home of the head keeper or head forester and is still in residential use. Historically it was one of the biggest buildings in Inverey and occupies a very prominent position on the hill above the village.
